it's been my turn for teaching the neighborhood preschool the last few weeks, and the kids have some placemats that they can sit on to keep them in order. At least, that's the idea. Well, on one crazy day the kids were having a hard time not running around so I told them that they had to stand on their mats or they were in hot lava. It worked ok for a while until they went overboard with the idea and every time anyone was anywhere off of their mat they would have to yell at the offender that they are in the lava. it created more commotion than the kids just being off their mat.

this is just one of my great ideas that kind of backfired on me.

another such moment occurred when i was teaching school in logan. i had the kindergartners in my class at the time and they had a lockdown. i don't remember if it was a drill or real but we had to cover the window in the door in our room, and hide under the table or something. i, in my brilliance, thought that it might be too scary to tell them that there might be a suspicious person walking around so i said that we were pretending that there was a lion outside and we were hiding from it. yeah. pretty soon there were crying kindergartners scared that they were about to be eaten by a lion.

don't worry. i've got lots more good ideas.
